Today at CamundaCon, our CTO Daniel Meyer (who also happens to have written more than 100,000 lines of Zeebe code) unveiled Camunda Cloud.
This is a big step for Camunda. It’s the first time in the company’s history that we’re offering a workflow service in the cloud, and we’re super excited to be starting down this path.
And we’re sharing the news here on the Zeebe blog because Zeebe is the workflow engine that sits at the heart of Camunda Cloud.
We set out to build Zeebe more than four years ago with the realization that modern software architectures (and the components they’re built with) would place entirely new demands on workflow engines–from high scalability to seamless integration with cloud-native systems. Zeebe was designed from the ground up with the cloud in mind, and it’s a natural fit for Camunda Cloud.
What is Camunda Cloud? And what’s coming next?
This first Camunda Cloud release includes Zeebe and Operate running on Camunda Cloud’s managed cloud infrastructure. In a nutshell, that means users can:
- Define workflow models in BPMN 2.0
- Deploy them to Camunda Cloud platform
- Connect worker services
- Monitor and manage running instances in Operate
…while we handle all of the heavy lifting around resource management, high availability, security, and more.
We’re equally excited about the Camunda Cloud roadmap. Cawemo, Camunda’s collaborative BPMN modeling tool, is already available in the cloud as part of the Camunda Cloud stack. In the future, it’ll be more tightly integrated so that users can build and refine models online then deploy them directly to Camunda Cloud with a single click.
And we’ll bring existing Camunda BPM enterprise products such as Optimize into the fold so that Camunda Cloud can truly enable the Model -> Orchestrate -> Improve process from end-to-end.
As for hardware, this first release of Camunda Cloud runs on Google Cloud infrastructure, and we expect to support AWS and Azure in the future.
What does this mean for Zeebe and Operate?
TL;DR business as usual!
We’re still investing heavily in Zeebe and Operate development–making good progress with both the free, source-available Zeebe distribution and Zeebe Enterprise–and we recently hired another awesome developer advocate to support the Zeebe community.
It might help to know a bit about how our engineering teams are currently organized here at Camunda. We have a dedicated team working on Zeebe, a dedicated team working on Operate, and another dedicated team bringing those products to Camunda Cloud.
We’re excited to be able to move forward with all three initiatives simultaneously and to improve Zeebe and Operate based on what we learn as we manage our own cloud platform.
And we’re optimistic that Camunda Cloud will offer the smoothest possible getting started experience for new users.
